What is your point? | WWA

I had a good old chinwag with my bestie on Saturday as we hadn’t seen each other for a couple of weeks and much had happened. We talked about IWD and the different events that we went to and what we had experienced. We had a good laugh and inadvertently entertained the chef behind the panel where we were sitting, as our laughter was contagious (she told us later) and it made her laugh and feel happy too.
During our talkfest, we were dissecting some of the media and press around International Women’s Day and the angry, uninformed outbursts and rage for example at the ABC for allowing women to step into all roles for the day. In my mind a symbolic gesture to celebrate the day. When we looked at the behaviour and actions of some, we kept coming back to this. What was their point? It seems to me like a random stab of anger was being made into the air. They appeared to have no point; I mean why bother? What are they trying to achieve?

It dawned on me that I’m not asking the question enough – What is this person’s point, What are they trying to achieve? And if we do get to the real reason, perhaps we can be more discerning about our response or whether we would even bother wasting energy, so much better preserved for points of purpose?

In preparation for All About Women, the Opera House sent through some briefing notes which included a summary of a story from a journalist from the Telegraph who had asked the question who is Australias Left wing FrightBat? It was an awful and mean piece that included a poll for people to vote. I don’t need to go into detail here and give it any more focus, as it was so disrespectful. I did ask myself, however, what was the point? Was it just to sell newspapers. I mean ….really?

While I’m writing this tonight, ( its quite late) the TV is on. The roast of Charlie Sheen is playing in the background. It’s the most awful, unfunny, nasty and misogynistic material I have ever heard. OMG, it is SOOO BAD – Am I getting old? I think I have a great sense of humour – wow – maybe fun has changed LOL, but seriously as I am writing this, I come back round again. What was the point? What was the point of people coming together to speak so revoltingly of Charlie Sheen and his life and his family? Even his children were the butt of bad taste jokes, and I keep wondering what their point was. Have we lost sight of any purpose of why we take the actions we take, say what we say or type what we type.? Are we just randomly bumping around with our actions and words and losing sight of the point we stand for or are attempting to imbue? I’m just pondering; I don’t have the answer.

Chrissie Teigan, an ex-model with a huge insta following is calling out the trolls, and boy are they mean. I love though that Teigan is calling it (See story here) AND what is their point?. I know I’m not sharing any revelation but its certainly making me think more about why I respond more than what I respond.

I will say that for me, it becomes an easy way to discern how much energy, time or focus I will give something.

I’m going to ask myself today, what’s my point? What’s the purpose of this action? If I don’t have a clear answer, thenI’m taking it off the list.
