The push and pull of time management | WWA

The amount of time, energy and money I have invested over the years into time management skills should have turned me by now into an expert in managing my time, but alas I think the sense of ‘time’ gene is missing from my pool. Chatting to members recently, I’m not the only one. “Everything takes so much darn longer than it plays out in my mind” was recently heard in a discussion on the subject of time and deliverability.  I completely get it. I often underestimate how long the thought and research part of a new task can take and as such I’m regularly running behind where I want to be with the completion of a project.

So let’s talk about the dynamics of our time. If you’re a parent, you have parenting things to do, and I don’t mean the washing, cooking or cleaning which still needs to be done too, but the time you give to your kids for listening and engaging. If you have staff you will know that some of your time is just spent delegating, listening and directing, and if you work on your own at your desk, your headspace has to be in the right place to move things forward. If you’re easily distracted or have a large workload it can be difficult focusing in on one prolonged task.

If we look at an even bigger picture, ( I’m a big picture thinker) the stress that comes from the pressure of not meeting your own deadlines is one of  the biggest evils weighing down our energy. The fact is that impediments that interfere with our day will come ALL the time, its how we handle them is what matters. When we resist, fight back, complain or get frustrated, we only get stressed. I’m attempting at the moment to go with current, as this is where the empowerment lay. When I do this, it always works out well, sometimes even better than I envisioned and I can arrive at the completion point with less stress and more joy having enjoyed the ride rather than fighting the whole way. I’m certainly not proficient yet, and I fall off the wagon ALOT like this morning, but I’m trying to monitor the ‘creep’ you know, the pressure creep where you suddenly feel overwhelmed by the insurmountable to do list? Just breathe and keep going, it will all work when it’s supposed to is the mantra, hey I’m writing this now at 1.52pm with calm, even though I had it on my list yesterday, smile and be zen 🙂
